Boxing gym opens in downtown Santa Rosa

Club X, a gym offering boxing, kickboxing and Zumba classes, recently opened its doors in downtown Santa Rosa.

The gym took over the vacant Ross Street space formerly occupied by Body Central, a women's gym that was sued by the state for refusing to admit men. Body Central closed four years ago and was followed by a health club that shut down in 2009.

Club X owner Israel Nu?z said he learned boxing as a teenager and began teaching his son and other boys for free about a decade ago. Three years ago, he started gyms in Rohnert Park and later Santa Rosa for children, youth and adults.

"Some of those kids from the very beginning, they still come," Nu?z said.

He opened the downtown gym about a month ago. It features a boxing team for children and youth. Monthly fees begin at $60, plus a sign-up fee of $40.
