Armed with an Art In Embassies commission, Santa Rosa artist Jenny Honnert Abell went to Dakar, Senegal, for inspiration. She came away with mental images of baobab trees, Senegal Parrots and soft, varied skintones, as well as natural sands in 10 colors used by Senegalese sand painters.
“It all made for visual overload,” Abell said.
Her 10 commissioned pieces will be permanently installed at the U.S. Embassy in Dakar in April. In Sonoma County, pieces that include a collection of Abell’s man-bird sculptures can be seen at Hammerfriar Gallery in Healdsburg.
