Young girl reads 400+ books over the summer
Penelope Sabatino has been racing through books all summer long. She has read more than 400 books between May 31 and Aug. 19, according to her mother, Melissa Sabatino, 36, of Santa Rosa. Penelope just turned seven this month.
Penelope, holding out her arms, declared, “This is my favorite place in the whole world,” as she stood in the children’s section of the Central Santa Rosa Library.
Children’s Librarian Brian Suwada, 53, of Santa Rosa said, “I have never heard of a child – or even an adult – reading that many books over the summer.” He said some parents come to his desk at the Central Library and say their child has read 30 or “a lot,” but nothing in the hundreds.
Some of Penelope’s favorite books are the Violet Mackerel series, books by Geronimo Stilton, Nancy Drew Clue Crew books, Shel Silverstein poems and anything with fairies. Her favorite fairy books are the Disney Fairy graphic novels. She knew where to find all the fairy books in the children’s section.
When asked what real place, in all the books she has read, she would like to visit one day, Penelope said, “France, because my favorite character comes from there.” She said Collette has “crazy adventures to Africa and everywhere” in the Geronimo Stilton books.
Penelope’s mother said she brings books to the dinner table and reads in the car. Penelope said she intended to keep on reading during the school year. “I can read sentences way faster than my Mom or Grandma,” she said.
